From Chinese-American Kitchens to an American Favorite
Orange Chicken belongs to the tradition of Chinese-American cooking, where Chinese techniques and flavor combinations evolved around the ingredients and tastes of American diners.
Its culinary roots can be connected to sweet-and-sour preparations from southern China, where meats were paired with combinations of sugar, vinegar, citrus peel, and other aromatics. Chinese cooks also have a long tradition of using dried citrus peel to bring fragrant, slightly bitter notes to savory dishes.
As Chinese cuisine developed in the United States, these ideas evolved. Fried, battered chicken became paired with a sweeter, brighter orange-flavored sauce, creating the crispy and heavily glazed preparation Americans recognize today.
The modern version of Orange Chicken became especially popular in the United States during the late 20th century, eventually establishing itself alongside General Tso's Chicken and Beef & Broccoli as one of the country's most recognizable Chinese-American dishes.
Orange Chicken represents what Chinese-American cuisine has done for generations: take Chinese cooking traditions, adapt them to a new place, and create something with an identity of its own.
Our Orange Chicken keeps that modern classic simple: crispy chicken, a sticky sweet-and-tangy orange glaze, fresh scallions, and steamed white rice.
